Furniture shopping...

So we just bought our first house and are now starting to think about actually filling it. We currently have a ton of hand-me-down furniture that is in pretty bad shape and would like to replace it with nicer pieces. Priorities are a new sofa, arm chair and dining table.

A challenge we've already encountered is that we are looking for furniture that fits with our mill-style house, not ornate or overly curvy/poufy, maybe closer to mission-style, rather than the huge amount of modern/metal style furniture we can't seem to get away from. We'd like to stay away from chains like Rooms To Go, Crate & Barrel and IKEA.

Des anyone have suggestions or recommendations of local, non-chain furniture stores we could visit? We're willing to do some driving.

I love mission style furniture. You will love this place! http://www.missionmotif.com/ over in Kirkwood. I've bought a few things there.

Also, Havertys and Ethan Allen have nicer, more classic furniture. Also check out Thomasville by Perimeter Mall, Badcock, and homedecorators.com. Believe it or not, Crate and Barrel has some really nice stuff at their Lenox Mall showroom.

Manorism, World of Rugs and Furniture and Horizons over on Ellesworth Ind Blvd. Also on Huff Rd is a Carolina furniture store called Cornerstone I think it is. All of these are in west midtown area.

Don't count out Crate & Barrel. I did until dh made me go in there. We actually found several pieces in their Lenox store that we got. I never thought we would buy anything from there but I ate my words. You have to go to the Lenox store thorugh to see the furniture.

We recently bought from Cornerstone Furniture and the experience was great. We really wanted a
"Color Cafe" Thomasville table. After googling I found out who the manufacturer was (Canadel) and found out about Cornerstone. It is more of a warehouse with tons of samples and catalogs to look through. Jeffery, the owner was great. Just describing what we were interested in he knew exactly what we wanted and showed us lots of similar options too. The only iffy is he is very boisterous and loves showing what a great deal you are getting.
