the latest comment re: the cupcakes

"You apologize for the name of the drink but make no effort to change it."

Oh, okay.  I'll just change it.  That should be easy enough.  Do you have the phone number of everyone in America?

Good God.

Really?  They're offended by the name of a drink that almost every bar in America serves?  If they have such a problem with it, maybe they should start there instead of taking it out on the cupcakes.

haha.well that's an idea for a new blog, one to perpetuate changing drink names. 'cause I'm sure you have time to write another!

I make food, photograph it, and eat it too.

Um, yeah.  You would not believe the uproar this has caused.  I am seriously being personally attacked left and right.  I blogged about a cupcake that was inspired by a drink I didn't name - guess that makes me a criminal!

No, I thought about it but she's busy dealing with her newborn and the whole thing is absolutely ridiculous anyway.  I'm really trying to just move past it and I was totally over it, and then I got that latest comment this afternoon and it just pissed me off all over again.

Wow, that's ridiculous! I can't believe people are seriously writing you about this. It's not like you created the drink.

Then again, I don't really understand how it's derogatory. Car bombs are awesome and beer/liquors from Ireland are fantastic.

Oh, don't get me started.  I didn't even have the slightest idea that the drink's name had a meaning, but apparently there were a large series of car bombings by the Irish in England and they liken it to 9/11.  This was before I was born and I've never even heard of it - so yeah.

I have had to deal with people like this. A person who 1) has the time to write a comment like that and 2) a person who is really that offended.. honey, they are just not normal.  Remind yourself this person has some issues, and move on. After awhile you will feel sorry for someone who is clearly so unhappy with the everything in life.

That's what I've been trying to do, but the sheer volume and vulgarity of these comments has been astounding.  I would say out of all the comments I have received, only one has been level-headed and simply said, "Hey, I know you didn't intend to offend but this is kind of offensive to me."  I actually just blocked comments on the post because I'm sick of dealing with it.

This is what I'm saying.  The whole entire blog entry is about cupcakes.  What's the big freaking deal?  There are much worse things in the world, they should find something else to worry about.

Wow! I am so sorry you are going through this. Some people are oversensitive. It's not like you named the drink. I hope the crazies leave you alone. You are my baking hero; so bake on! I just don't understand how people can be so upset about cupcakes...seems like a sin to me.

That is just insanity!  It's not like you made a whole post about how you condone car bombings and made these cupcakes for the bombers.  I mean, c'mon people!  They're cupcakes!  Cupcakes are supposed to make people happy!

Now I want to make these this weekend just to tick some people off.  LOL!

DH says that if you really want to incur some wrath, you should make "black and tan" cupcakes (the "black and tan" being both the British secret police who cracked down on the Irish and a drink consisting of Guinness and Bass).

In all seriousness, I get why the concept is offensive to some people, but to get mad over cupcakes that take inspiration from the drink is just silly.

Okay, I am Irish so here's the low down. The reason people get angry about the name of the Irish Car Bomb is because the Provisional Irish Republican Army's weapon of choice was bombs, car bombs in particular, during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. In the seventies there was an event called Bloody Friday where several bombs, mostly car bombs, were set off in Belfast.

Alright, I think it's ridiculous that people are getting offended. It's a cupcake recipe! People don't know EVERY event that occured in history, and Annie was kind enough to change the name of her recipe. If it's that offensive, don't whip up the recipe and don't order the drink. I will tell you one thing, if that's what you do, you are missing out!

Wow.

I just told my husband, who loves the drink version, about the comments you and SK (who yes, had a ton from what I saw and I didn't even go through all of her comments) received.  He asked if you told them all that they're idiots.

I first saw Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes well over a year ago, and DH has been drinking the liquid version for as long as I've known him.  It's crazy what people will take up a crusade against.
