*Alisha*

So could you talk to me about your Danes for a minute?  DH and I have a pooch right now but would love to get a Dane someday.  We actually met a Dane/Lab mix a couple weekends ago and fell in love.  If we weren't in a tiny apartment we would have adopted him.  I actually can't stop thinking about him (Clyde was his name) and I keep having to stop myself from calling the shelter.  I just don't think it would be fair to bring a big dog into such a tiny place.  Even though my heart is breaking over the fact that if he hasn't been adopted yet he's still stuck in a shelter.

Just wondering what you love so much about them.  I've heard they're wonderful dogs, very mellow, and great with kids.  I'd love to hear a little bit about your experience.  I think they are beautiful and amazing!   Yours are gorgeous btw.  Thank you!

I have a Sheltie, not a Dane, but I have heard that Danes make great apartment dogs.  Not sure how tiny your place is, the Dane/lab could take up your whole living room, but since they're so mellow and easy to train and get along with, they just hang out with you in an apartment and don't run around like a crazy idiot, like say a Sheltie Stick out tongue

My dad's cousin Yolanda loves Danes... Her and her husband have had four or five and they always get way attatched to their awesome personalities! I would be concerned with the shorter life spans and definetly look into your breeders history of cancer. Other than that, I think they're great!

I've heard the same thing about Danes, that they do fine in an apartment even though they are larger dogs.

I would actually be more concerned about the lab part of the mix.   Labs are really excellent dogs but do need plenty of exercise and attention or they can get destructive.  They seem to do best with a yard.  I grew up with one, she is an old lady now, but still has a puppy temperament.

As the dog is a mix, the personality could really go either way, though.  Maybe the Dane part of the mix is enough to calm down the lab side.  Big Smile

Whether or not a Dane would do well in an apartment I think really depends on the people and particular dog. I would hate it, but I'm used to just letting my dogs out to potty! You have to be realistic about how much you're going to want to take the dog out potty, and out to parks, etc. Do you have good dog parks near you? Also doing doggy day care 1-2 times a week, or hiring a dog walker, can be a huge help!

Its so funny to me how much is ingrained in breeds as far as personality. Every Dane/Lab mix I have met is such a clear combination of the two...goofy, leaners, but with the lab energy and ability to fetch. Danes...not such good fetchers!!

Also you have to think about what you'd do if you have to move. Not many apartments or rentals accept big dogs!

Thanks ladies!  I already have one pup so I do know the full responsibility of a dog, he's just a little guy though.  He gets plenty of exercise - we're very active, outdoorsy people so I'm not concerned with the whole potty bit.  Good to know that a Dane may not be bothered too much by a smaller space.

Alisha - the next time we move is when we buy!  We are just starting the looking process but it probably won't happen for a few more months.  I was just curious more or less to their overall personality.  My little guy loves other dogs and people but can also be somewhat protective of his mom!  We probably won't get Clyde...I just can't stop thinking about him!

Anyways, thanks again everyone!
