U.S. Virgin Islands?

We're thinking about skipping Hawaii in 2010 and going to the USVI instead (much shorter flight and less expensive).

If you've been there...which island is your favorite?  Where did you stay?  Favorite activites?

I'm just starting my research so fill me in on your experiences and recommendations!

TIA!

I highly suggest St. John, USVI. You fly into St. Thomas and then take the ferry over to the island. We were on a cruise when we visited, so I don't have ideas of where to stay.

Yep, definitely this!  St. John is amazing.  Caneel Bay and the Westin are the two main hotels on the island, but I'm sure there are also B&B's and there are definitely lots of villas for rent!

another vote for St. John.

We stayed at Caneel bay and loved it. Friends stayed the Westin and like that as well.

It is such a beautiful island--amazing beaches!!

We went to St. Thomas for a few hours before our flight and that was enough.

We were just on St John last week! We had a super time hiking, snorkeling and relaxing.

We stayed here:

http://www.calabashcottages.com/sago.htm

It's on the east end of the island.

If you don't go the villa/private home way, Caneel Bay Resort was WAY more impressive than Gallows Point or the Westin.  The Caneel Bay has multiple private beaches that are just beautiful and the grounds are lovely.  The Westin didn't impress with either.

The majority of the island is national park, so make sure to check out some of the NPS organized activities.  We did the Reef Bay Trail walk with a ranger and it was really fun.

I recommend reading restaurant reviews on TripAdvisor.com.  I found those really helpful.

St. John - Caneel Bay

We went there on our honeymoon and it was heaven on Earth. Caneel Bay is expensive but worth it!

We actually preferred St Thomas to St John, but we stayed on the East End, which is further from town (near the ferry to St John actually). We didn't actually go into Charlotte Amalie, so for all I know it might be the touristy hell everyone says it is. The main reason we preferred St Thomas is that we thought the food was much better and cheaper, and it was easier to get around. Driving on St John was scary.

We stayed at a Point Pleasant Resort, which we thought was perfect. If we go to USVI again we plan on staying there the entire time (instead of splitting the week between St Thomas and St John) and taking day trips to St John and the British Virgin Islands.

STJ!!

We spent a week in St. John back in May.  It's very idilic.  St. Thomas is more populated, larger city so less island feel.

Skip the big hotels.  Villa or condo rentals are very affordable.  We stayed at Time Out villa.  Picking up parents at the airport tonight from STJ for their 2nd trip this year..  We love Cruz Bay since there's a bit more nightlife, but Coral Bay is also fabulous (craving a bleu cheeseburger from Skinnys).

Check out the USVI forum- great tips here: http://www.virgin-islands-on-line.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1

I wanna go where I can lighten up the load; Drive a little while on the wrong side of the road
Get this laying low off to a flying start. Play my guitar in the Caribbean sun
Hang with the locals at the Quiet Mon, Where you can be a tourist, a beach bum, or a star
And be as you are

(I miss St. John, USVI)

What could be scary about driving down Centerline on the wrong side of the road while drinking a beer?

Ys, it's legal to drink & drive (not drunk) BUT you'd better be wearing your seatbelt!
