Selling a car for parts-Questions

My transmission went out on my truck and the cheapest we found to have it repaired is $3,600.  That is just not possible for us right now.  Both mechanics could not find a rebuild.  My question is how do you go about selling a car for parts only?  How do find out the value of a vehicle that technically isn't operational (it still runs in all the other gears except drive)?  Can you trade in a vehicle that isn't operational?  Any info or recommendations would be helpful.  TIA.

I don't know the answer to all your questions, but one thing you can do is sell it to a junkyard for the parts.  You can call around to see who will give you the best price.  You sign the title over to them.

Whether you can trade it in is something you'd want to ask a dealer.  I'd imagine you won't get that much for it in trade-in value.

You could also try posting it on Craigslist as for sale, with the info re: the transmission.  Someone who is able to fix it might purchase it.

You could try U Pull R Parts.  I know there's a location in Rosemount, not sure if there's one anywhere else.  I've never sold a car to them but I've gotten parts from there in the past.

Maybe try Craigslist, too.

What about donating it to one of the local high schools and getting a tax deduction?

This is something I'm looking at too.  There are a few organizations that take donations.

I feel your pain. I had to replace my transmission about 2 years ago. It cost me $3,000 and that was with a rebuilt transmission. As for donating, my dad donated his car a couple years back and they had to drive and it make sure it could operate before they took it but there maybe some organizations that do not have that requirement?

I would check the parts place the pp talked about. I know H always buys stuff from them but has never sold to them. Good luck, I hope it all works out.

Courage Center accepts car donations when the car doesn't run in its current condition.

You can sell the car to a junkyard for parts, but you probably won't get more than a few hundred dollars for it. You'd probably be better off donating it and taking the tax deduction.
