"Now, tell me about your dogs."

That's what Sarah's seemingly uptight neonatologist said to me today after we finished discussing her tentative discharge plans.

Me:  Well, what do you want to know?

Him:  I want to know how many there are and how big they are.

Me:  (thinking to myself:  can't you just count the dogs on the Christmas card that's been hanging on her bed all this time?)  We have seven dogs.  The largest is 55lbs, the smallest is 10lbs.  They're not allowed in Sarah's bedroom, they're not allowed in our bedroom, we keep them brushed and they're on a high quality diet, we vacuum and sweep every day...

Him:  I'm not worried about cleanliness, I'm worried about safety.

Me:  *crickets*  Wha?

I was expecting a lecture on how fragile and immature Sarah's lungs are and how dog hair can be a problem...instead he acted like I'm too stupid to keep my dogs from eating her.  I understand and appreciate where he's coming from...and he really knows nothing about me...and I guess the average person (outside of my dog infested world) probably thinks that anyone with seven dogs must be at least a tiny bit stupid...but really.  I would have been less offended if he'd been suggesting that my house is probably less clean than the city dump.

I explained (in great detail and in one long breath) how our dogs have all been to obedience classes, how they are expected to behave inside and outside the house, how we realize that they're animals and not just small hairy kids.  I told him that we have two performance dogs (and I actually said that part with a straight face though it cracks me up to call Veronica and Marley "performance dogs") and a soon-to-be-therapy-dog, that 5-6 of our best friends are agility or obedience trainers.  I also explained that we didn't just start working on our dogs when I got pg...we've never let them just act like fools.

I started to add that the soon-to-be-therapy-dog is a 55lb stray male pit bull that I scraped out of the road a year ago, but then I remembered that this guy will be the one signing off on Sarah's discharge.

Dude...I sure hope you're more concerned with the crack moms I've seen in the last three months than you are about me and my dogs...

**On a happier note, she could be home as soon as THIS WEEKEND!!!!**

I'm just teasing you.  I doubt he would say she couldn't go home just because you have dogs, I mean seriously.

Does she have to do a car seat test?  My cousins' daughter spent some time in NICU and had to pass a 3 hr car seat test (which she almost failed!)  They got her through it by singing to her so they were recommending people bring a radio or w.e. so the baby is entertained and not grumpy about it.

LOL.. I agree that the vast majority of the world is not as dog savy as you...  you're easily amoung the 10 most dog savy of all the dog savy people I know...

That and judging from my observations hanging out in my ob's waiting room (unfortunetly something I've spent some time doing lately) the vast majority of the breeding public ARE idiots, or at least behave like them. (someday i should share the story of the KU 16 year old getting in a screaming fight with her momma and baby daddy in the WR... yeah.....)

So yeah, I guess I can see where he's coming from... but in this case, worry doesn't apply. We can inindate him with references if need be..  ;)

EEEeeeeeeek! this weekend? really!! Omg!!

p.s. my laptop keyboard is broken... it gets a new one next week, but in the meantime, i type like a first grader writes.. sorry!!

Yeah, that's on the schedule for later in the week.  I believe she'll have to do 1.5hrs.  And I also believe as long as she doesn't brady or desat she'll pass...I'm probably jinxing myself but her last brady was more than a month ago and her last desat was 10/17.  We should be good to go.  I hope!

I'm rarely on here anymore but I've been following your story - congrats to you and Sarah.  I hope she gets to come home soon.  And "SLAP" - that's a big slap in the head for your doctor.

Yeay! She's coming home! What a jerkface about asking you about your dogs. I agree he should have more important things to worry about. Maybe a good question to make sure you aren't letting them run amuck, but for sure not important to question every detail.

I loved you first.

Congrats on her coming home this weekend! She's beautiful and I love the new siggy picture! (I would have been offended by the doctor's comments, too.)
