Work is moving to new location...I'm a little upset

I've known for some time now we were moving to East Hartford in April.  I'm fine w/ the move itself, it's a little bit closer, so that's good.

Here is what I'm upset about.  Working the evening shift- I get out anywhere from 12-3 a.m. (average 1:30-2)

Our location now has a secured parking area and garage.  You have to go through a security gate w/ a guard to come and go.  I LIKE having a security guard when I am walking to my car at that hour, and I like that the lot is secured so you need a badge to get in.

In the new location, there is no guard on duty, no garage, and no badge required to enter the parking lot.
This really is bothering me.

One of DH's biggest questions when I was taking this job was making sure I had a secured lot w/ a guard.

I've spoken w/ other women in my dept and they are nervous about this too.   We've agreed to a "buddy system" between a few of us so nobody walks out alone but still.

Am I crazy for being a little nervous about this?

Not at all...I used to get nervous walking to my car at 7 or 8 in the evening when I worked out in Bristol.  I had a few patients that wrote me some pretty forward emails, and I had another female co-worker who had a cop stalking her..The police station was down the street, but the parking lot was in a crappy area and wasn't well lit at all..

You're not crazy at all!  I don't blame you for being nervous.  Heck, I get out at 10pm and I'm cautious!

No, you're not crazy at all, and it's actually something I think should be brought up to management to see if there's room in the budget for a night guard.  Where I work, the entrance is gated and there are guards, but if I have to work very late or come in at a weird time (we have equipment hooked up to alarms, and if an alarm goes off, invariably in the middle of the night, someone has to come in to check it), I even have a guard escort me to my car or my lab or wherever.  In this day and age, I don't think you can ever be too careful.  GOod luck!

I'd bring the concerns up to your manager.  Our company has security on site 24/7.  If you're parked in one of the far lots, they don't want you to walk - regardless of the time.  And, if you ever feel nervous, you can get a security escort - no questions asked.  Employee safety should be a top priority at your company.  I'm surprised they didn't think about this before..

Do you all get out at the same time?   Also, can they hire a guard for just the night staff?

I agree with the pp's. I'd definitely be nervous (I was when I worked until 9) and bring it up to your manager. I'm sure something can be worked out so you can have some sort of escort or guard for the shift change.

I dont think you are crazy at all. I think you can never be too careful. I think it is a valid concern and you should bring it up to management . Good luck.

I think you've gotten good suggestions but just wanted to let you know you are not crazy for being nervous. I'd feel the same way. I like the idea of a buddy system too.
