who or how did you learn to sew?

I really want to learn how to sew using a sewing machine but i am not sure how to go about it.  I have locally searched for a place that gives lesson, but i haven't had any luck.  Any ideas? Book recommendations? online?

Online: youtube is great. Well, some are great. Some of them are a bit blurry or don't show what is actually going on with the machine (for some reason they skip that part!!!!). You can tell right away if you got a good one or not.

I heart youtube.

As for me.... I took sewing in 4-H. The rest I figured out by trial and error. Mainly error. Big Smile

I took sewing lessons at Singer Sewing Center when I was 16. That's how I learned.

Is there an Adult Ed school near you? I know that my local Adult Ed has sewing lessons (and knitting and crochet, and photography, etc.). Also check your local fabric shop - they may be able to point you in the right direction.

I'm a firm believer that you should learn how to do crafts from an actual person - both the tips and tricks they provide, as well as the "how to fix your mistakes" are invaluable!

First, read your owners manual on your machine.

Second, look at Singer's Complete Guide to Sewing. It's a good book with lots of pictures.

Third, get thee to a library. Look at all sorts of books on whatever it is you want to make. There are tons of books for beginners.

My mom and my grandma taught me just enough to not get intimidated by it. Past that, I figured the rest out on my own.

I took sewing as an elective in school, but my daughters learned by watching and doing. First they had to get over their fear of the machine, so I just had them sew straight seams for me,and once they got over their fear, they picked up the rest from asking questions and watching.

There are some great books and even magazines that will show step by step how to master a particular skill.  They usually explain why you do things that you do.  I've seen a couple of sewing related tv shows that have some good instruction as well.

'Easy' patterns sometimes aren't easy, because they simplify the steps so much that there is not enough direction, but I know people who have used 'sewing for dummies' patterns and were happy with them.

Our local fabric store offers classes in bothbasic sewing and in knowing how to use your machine.  Even though I have been sewing for a long time, I find their class very helpful when I get a new machine.

I thought I was the only one who first learned to sew in 4H!

I started there, took a class or two in high school, then a serious sewing class in college.  Learned TONS in that class.  Use a lot of it today.

The rest was trial and error.  I just stopped caring if it was perfect.  I have just become willing to make my mistakes on a first version then remake it a second time to get the results I want.

I'm not sure if you have a Joanns or Michaels in your area but I took a beginners sewing class there and I bought a $100 Brother brand sewing machine and so far so good. I have had one successful skirt so far. Good luck.

Watched my mom and then jumped in ... use scrap pieces of fabric and just get a feel for the machine and how it works.  Its easy to catch on to.

I first learned in home ec class in middle school. My mom & grandma also sew though, so I've been around it. I've taught myself how to quilt though.

Do you have a Hancock Fabrics near you? I think they may have classes. Also do you have any family or friends that sew, I'm sure they would be glad to help you out.  If you're a member of a church you could probably ask one of the older, crafty ladies for help/lessons.

The easiest cheapest way to learn, how I learned.. ask some of the older women in your family or DHs family to teach you.. one on one interaction is much better than a class or a book!!

My mom taught me the basics as a child.  The rest, I echo these sentiments:

My grandmother taught me when I was around 10yo.  It was very basic though: how to thread the machine, sew pillows, etc.

I bought a new, beginner machine ($100 Singer Simple from WM).  I used youtube to find a great video on how to thread mine (the instruction booklet sucks).  I also enrolled in JoAnn Fabric's Sewing 101 class since you can bring your own machine (50% off today so only $18).

Home Ec in 8th grade, and then trial and error.  When my grandmother passed away, my mom inherited her sewing machine, and I did my "homework" on that.  I used scraps (anything I could get my hands on) to make things.

I put it down after a couple of years, but broke down and got a machine because I needed something to do with my hands.
