Nanowrimo ladies, writing tips?

Hey guys, just wondering if any of you want to exchange any writing tips. I know there are tons on the site, but it might be fun to talk about ours.

Mine I started doing today. My story was heading towards the climax WAY too quickly. So now instead of sending my character somewhere, having a conversation, then leaving I give myself a word minimum. I'm sure there will be downsides (lots of useless crap) but there are also upsides - I got a really good scene out of it today when I couldn't let my character leave the woods before I had written 1,000 words.

Oh, and I need opinions on something. I want to go back and add a small character. Is that too much like going through and editing? I wouldn't go back to edit and change small things or delete stuff, but I feel like it would be really hard to just start writing like this character has been there all along. So should I go back, which is kind of against the spirit of nanowrimo, or should I just start writing about the character like she has been there all along? She is just a pet, a normal pet who will be a companion for the main character (she doesn't talk or anything, ha, so that makes it easier to put her in).

I think it's up to you to be honest.  If you can figure out a way to do it by writing the pet in now, then cool...but if it'd make more sense to add earlier, then do it.

Snowy- I like the idea of giving yourself a word minimum!  I need to give myself a maximum as I think I'm trying to stuff too much in.  And I was writing on a new document when it struck me that it would be better to do something from the day before different.  So I made myself a little note to change it when I went back to edit it.  It will mean serious editing, but I'm not going to do it now.  Why don't you write about how you want the character to be introduced and interact with your other characters, then add it "officially" later... just a thought!

Hi Snowy

I used the snowflake method to help me develop my story outline.  I didn't go into tremendous details as it instructed, but it has helped me to pace my story.

I mean, it IS a formulaic way of writing, but for my first try... why not?
