Call your town(the health department should be able to give you an answer). A lot of towns provide a drop off, often at the fire department, where you can safely dispose of used needles so they don't wind up in the garbage which is dangerous to garbage disposal workers and illegal in most states. A pharmacy could also order you a larger sharps container or a clipper to clip off the needle so they would fit in your current sharps container.
