MrsEggs re: green tea

I had NEVER heard that before!  What is it about green tea specifically that inhibits the absorption of folic acid?  Should I be weary of other teas also?

Thanks for the heads up though!

I'm not sure on the specifics, but we heard about it in our child birth education class.

Any caffiene can prevent your body from absorbing vitamins/minerals. I think green tea is especially 'bad' but I think black is ok-is that right?

I don't drink caffienated tea though... so does that means it's ONLY a factor if caffiene is present?  Hmmm.

Hmm... I don't think it's the caffiene though:

Green tea contains much less caffeine than black tea and so you’ll be safe drinking more.  The average amounts of caffeine in various teas is:

  • US Tea (black): 40mg
  • Imported Tea (black): 60mg
  • Green Tea: 15mg

I drink green tea, white tea, and red tea like it is going out of style.  No one has ever told me to do anything different.  I switch to tea when I am pregnant...seriously, 2 cups of tea a day!  It must not be too bad for you or my OB or other doctors would have stopped me by now...I always drink decaf tea too!

I'm a big tea drinker and I haven't stopped during my pregnancy. My midwife says it's perfectly fine. I don't drink as much green tea as I used to, but I still do drink it.

I've read that if you avoid green tea within a few hours of your prenatal you should be ok and it shouldn't interfere too much.

But then I can't remember where I read this - so it may be internet lore ;)

Its thought that EGCG is what inhibits the absorption of folate (its also structurally similar to methotrexate).  Lack of folic acid causes neural tube defects.

My dr told me that there are studies that support both sides of the debate.  She wanted me to stay away from it because my body already has issues with breaking down folic acid correctly.

Thanks.  I couldn't remember what it was exactly.  I've been trying to explain to DH why they told us to avoid green tea while preparing for/during our IVF cycle (and I've been too lazy to look it up).  They only mentioned that it interferes but not why.
