Life Insurance Beneficiaries

Who do you have as your secondary beneficiary after your spouse?

I'm filling out benefits forms at work today and don't know who to put.  I'm thinking I will put my brother even though we're not that close.  I also thought about my godson as a percentage of it.

My sister.

You could also leave it to your parents if you think they could use it.

My mom because she would be the one to plan my funeral.  My brother would probably spend it on Taco Cabana and cigs.

Of course, if every couple had mature and difficult conversations to solve their problems, what would we do for drama on the nest? -EastSideFluffy

I am quite concerned about this as well.  But I am not close to my mother.  She was my secondary beneficiary before but we don't even really speak now.  She pretty much turned crazy.

Do you have another relative (or even a close friend) who you think would take charge the funeral planning?  I would leave at least something to that person.  Can you split it?  Do you have a close aunt or cousin or someone like that who you could talk to about planning your funeral?  That's the main reason I picked my mom.

25% to my sister, 25% to my brother, and 50% to my mother who will handle my estate.

Since it's a secondary beneficiary and I figure the odds of both DH and I dying at the same time are much lower than just I dying I feel safe.  If DH died first I would change my beneficiaries anyway.  I did tell him he'd have to pay for my funeral.  With a little guidance from my aunt he could plan it.

My brother.  He is responsible.  He's under instruction to give some to my BFF to help her if she's still struggling.  (She's responsible too, but I thought family was easier.)

If it matters to you, there may be gift tax implications depending on how much your brother gives your BFF.  Also, he's under no (legal) obligation to do so.

Yeah, I know he's not.  Interesting about the gift tax implications, though.  I will have to look into that a bit more.  Perhaps I should change it to an actual percentage for each.

I need to fill out my beneficiary cards, right now they are going to no one!Tongue Tied

I think DH had me as his primary and then his sister as his secondary. I am not sure if we had a third person on there in the event she was gone too.

DH and I each only have one brother. My brother is my secondary beneficiary, and his brother is his.  We will change this when we have children.

Hmmmm...I don't know.  DH set up my life insurance policy through work and I think he put himself down as my beneficiary to handle the final arrangements if anything ever happened.  Since he's not a big fan of the way my parents treated me in life.  So he sure as heck wouldn't want them handling my things after my death.  Ha.  Other than DH, I don't really have anybody to handle things for me because I have no siblings.

My parents right now.

I want to change it to the niece/nephew since they need it more than my parents would.
