Home buying VENT - tips for sellers

After an arduous, exhausting day of looking at 10 properties in Longmeadow yesterday, I have some advice for anyone who might be selling a home.

First, sweet mother of Abraham Lincoln, LAY OFF THE YANKEE CANDLES. I can't say this enough. 3 or 4 of the properties we looked at were so heavily perfumed that I got a headache and wanted to leave before we had even finished seeing the places. It won't, I repeat, WON'T cover that dog smell you think it will cover, no matter what you saw on HGTV, and it doesn't fool anyone. Open a window if you must, or better yet, give the poor dog a bath.

Second, clean your damn house. And by clean, I mean get all that crap you don't need to own and put it somewhere else, or better yet get rid of it entirely. And by somewhere else, I mean not in your home. Anywhere. Because if you just shove it all in the closets or the garage, I'll get annoyed, because I want to see your closets and garage, because if you're very very lucky they might become MY closets and MY garage, and I want to see if my sweaters and my car belong there.

Third, and this is perhaps the most important point I'd like to make, your infant's bedroom is not the place for your cat's litterbox. Especially if your cat sh!ts on the floor (which definitely should have been taken care of before I got there, but that's another story). Owners of that place on Maple Road, I'm talking to you here. You have two bathrooms, fer chrissake, and that poor sweet baby in that room and the other one in your belly can do without the life-threatening toxoplasmosis. It's revolting, unsanitary, and borderline grounds for involving social services.

Ugh. Vent over. Thanks.

Imagine what their houses look like when they don't have people coming over who might be interested in buying? :::shudders:::

lol.  you just described our april 2007 - february 2008.  it really got to the point where i said to mh, "i'll see you outside."  that was my way of saying, "this place is grossing me out/giving me a headache - and i can't get passed it enough to consider buying this place."  i was shocked.  shocked.  just wait till you see the cinimon on the stove (oh - that might be fall), cookies in the oven (winter), incense (that was a treat).  i used to smack mh's hand when he went to take "stranger" food cookies :)

try to keep your humor and you will be OK!

Before my parents downsized -5 yrs ago - my Mom and I spent days, nights and weekends cleaning out the attic, garage and cellar, just for this very reason.

There was one realtor who brought candles. My mom's realtor told her the house was clean (before any showing/open house everything from ceilings to silver were cleaned) and not to light the candles.

I won't even tell you about several houses MH and I looked at 10 yrs ago. Water (6" at least) in one basement, bundles of papers....

Holy crap.  I stopped reading after I read about the litter box on Maple Road.  My friends live on Maple Road in Longmeadow!!!!!  I know it wasn't their house but good god! I have to send her a copy of this post.  She'll die if she knows these people.

Sorry you didn't have a fun time house hunting today.  I hope you find something great soon.

CA - there are such cute houses on Maple Road, even if the road is a little busy. We loved the area.

Too bad about the cat sh!t though! LOL.

I've never been to their house but I've seen pictures.  It does look really cute.  She really loves it there too.  But yes the cat sh!t is unfortunate, lol

your post has me cracking up.

We went to a couple of open houses today to get ideas for finishing our basement.  We had the opposite experience today- one house was vacant- so, kind of hard to picture things, the other house looked like a model home, it was staged to the 9's.  It looked absolutely beautiful and inviting, even the closets were pristine.  Made me realize how dirty my house is at the moment.
