Poll: Your Car/SUV (need car shopping help!)

What do you have?
Would you recommend it?
How's the gas mileage?
Does it have AWD?
Anything else to consider?

We have one car, a '98 Volvo with 117K miles on it. I drive that, and we expect it to get to 200K miles since Volvo's last forever... Except it has rear wheel drive which sucks in snow, so we may replace it for something safer in snow in a couple years (once we have kids).

In the mean time, MH needs a car in the next few weeks for work. We are leaning towards a small SUV -- he is a coach and would love the space for equipment, they get better mileage than larger SUV's, plus when we start a family (we are ttc now) it would be a good since he (as a teacher w/better hours than me) will be doing a lot of the child-transportation stuff. Also, we'd probably like to buy pre-owned and not spend a huge chunk of money...

So, thoughts on cars or SUV's to consider? I'm totally overwhelmed with everything on the market... Thanks!

I have the Toyota Highlander Hybrid.  Love it!  I wanted four-wheel drive because of my work, need to be able to get around in the winters, but felt bad about getting a gas guzzler.  I am averaging 26 miles per gallon which is about the same as most non-hybrid cars.  The Hybrid only uses four-wheel drive if it needs too and runs on electric when going flat or downhill.

What do you have? Subaru Outback Wagon
Would you recommend it? Absolutely
How's the gas mileage? I get 22 in the city and 28 hwy
Does it have AWD? yes and it's great in the snow
Anything else to consider? You can get one for under $20K new.  They last forever, my mom has had them for 25 years (3 cars in all that time, 200K each)

As far as cargo room, I can fit more stuff in my wagon than my friend with a Jeep Cherokee.  We got a whole entertainment center back there once!

1. We have two a.) Dodge Intrepid and b.) BMW X3 2. Yes and yes 3. OK, probably 25 MPG for the Dodge and 22 for the BMW 4. No and yes. 5. Check out the backseat space, since RF infant seats and convertible seats can take up a lot of room. Also trunk space is very important. The BMW doesn't have a lot of room, I couldn't leave my stroller in (Chicco Cortina) and attempt to go grocery shopping for the week. When our lease is up we're looking at either the new CRV or the Saturn Vue.

Ranger Rover Sport

Yes I would I love it!

The gas is not good I'm not gonna lie ($65ish to fill up and lasts about a week but we hardly drive it since DH has a work truck and we have a civic too)

It does have AWD or it might be 4W
It is so comfortable, you can pretty much adjust it to whatever fits you.. Everything can be moved around and it has blue tooth so you can connect your phone and use it hands free..

What do you have? Honda Pilot
Would you recommend it? Generally, yes.
How's the gas mileage? Not great, but not as bad as the Jeep Grand Cherokee we had before.
Does it have AWD?  4WD
Anything else to consider?  Just check safey ratings. If you don't need an SUV I would shoot for an AWD sedan.  I have an SUV for work purposes - no other reason to have one, IMO.  Even the hybrids I checked out didn't really thrill me on mileage for SUVs.

oh yeah, and if you can splurge and go for Navigation and such - totally do it. I love my Navi and all of the hands free controls (voice activated) and I also have the camera in the back for when I'm backing up - which is actually rather useful.  We were talking to people before buying our cars last year and every person in the industry (not just our sales person) told us to go with built-in navigation b/c in 3+ years almost everyone will be wanting Navi and it'll help with trade-in values. we were going to skip it since we had a GPS but we're glad we didn't.

Not sure if my info will help as there aren't a lot of pre-owned RDX's out there as they just came out in 2007...and the ones that are out there aren't that much cheaper than the new 2008's...

What do you have? Acura RDX
Would you recommend it? Definitely.  LOVE IT!
How's the gas mileage? Not great, about 20MPG
Does it have AWD? Yes
Anything else to consider?  We wanted a smaller SUV that would hold two kiddos and their stuff, as well as trips to Home Depot, but didn't want a larger SUV.  I also wanted one that had decent horsepower so that I could move when I want/need to.  It's a 4 cyl, so it's not as heavy as some of the others, but has a turbo engine so I still get 240HP.

2006 Toyota 4Runner

I love it - it's perfect for us.  It's got a little more storage and ground clearance than most other mid-sized SUVs.  And it drives like a car which I love.

Gas mileage is ok - average around 18-19 mpg for general driving.  In the 20's if I'm just doing highway (around 22-23).  I usually get at least 300 miles to a tank, fill up once a week or so.

It's 4WD which means it's not always 4WD which I was a fan of.  Helps conserve gas, especially since I only got the V6, not the V8 (which was AWD).

I'm a big fan of Toyota.  I had an Infiniti before this and I felt like it had a lot of wasted space.  And DH warned me before I bought this... he said once you're in an SUV you'll want something bigger (mainly when looking at the smaller SUVs).  And so far he's been right - sometimes I wish I had more space, mainly trunk room.  But overall this truck is perfect for me, even though I occasionally gaze longingly at the new Tahoes.  Those are some pretty trucks (my mom has one from 2000 and loves it).

What do you have?  '06 Audi A4 2.0T
Would you recommend it?  Absolutely
How's the gas mileage?  33 hwy/28 city
Does it have AWD?  Yes
Anything else to consider?  It has a huge trunk for a smaller car.  The A6 has an even bigger trunk and more rear seat room.    It climbs out of the snow like a dream.  Love this car, and buying it just under 2 years old saved us a bundle.

What do you have? 2006 Nissan Murano
Would you recommend it? Absolutely! I love this SUV!
How's the gas mileage? Pretty good - I think its 27 highway and 20-22 city.
Does it have AWD? Yes - it is incredible in the snow.  My DH is a snowplower and can't believe how good this car is to drive in the snow.
Anything else to consider? Very roomy and comfortable.  Love the rear camera and keyless entry/starter.
