Question: Travel with infant

Hi ladies - I need help!
One of our good friends is getting married on memorial day weekend and we really really want to go.
However, we are very nervous about travelling with our 9 months old baby.

We are coming from CA - we plan to arrive in JFK - then go stay in the hotel south of Central park. We were told that we do need to take a cab to the events.

How do you do car seat with the cab?  we have the huge giant Britax one. Any baby friendly hotel? where to get all the baby food, diapers, etc conviniently. Also is stroller pretty convinient to have/bring with us - or with the crowded street we better of carrying our baby?

I'm sorry about all the silly questions - I've been to NYC only once before and remember having TONS of fun but we did avoid the whole cab thing and walk almost everywhere.

Thank you soo mucn!!! I greatly appreciate any advice you can give me!

I can help with some parts...I would definitly bring a stroller. If you have a smaller, light one that is a LOT easier, but don't worry, the only problem you'll have is competing with all the other strollers.  :-)  baby food, diapers are available at any of the drug stores, which in most areas are every couple of blocks (Duane Reede, Walgreens, and RiteAid are the big ones).
hth!

I think that cabs are exempt from car seat rulls by the way so you can use one or not depending on your prefernce. You could also rent a car and you might be able to rent a carseat there.

Cabs are exempt, you don't have to use a car seat in them. If you do want to, you have to check your particular car seat and figure out how to buckle it in without a base. I haven't gotten that brave yet, since DS is only 4 weeks old and not really getting out yet.

You might get more hotel info on the travel board. Honestly, I have no idea, I don't stay at the hotels here. Food & Diapers, like pp said, any drugstore, CVS, RiteAid, Walgreens, Duane Reade. Seriously, you shouldn't have to walk more than 2 blocks in any direction before you run into one. BRU has a location in Union Square, but why bother, the extra cost at a drugstore will be worth the cab fare to get there.

You could probably use a lightweight stroller, like a MacLaren. If you & baby are comfortable you could go with a carrier and that would be fine, too. Depends on how much you like to keep the baby in the carrier and how strong your back is! ;-) Don't try to carry in your arms, that won't work, use a Bjorn or something.

We traveled from PA to CO when our DS was 9 mths old. These are my recommendations. Buy and umbrella stroller, its the easiest. I would also recommend your baby carrier if you plan on going somewhere short distance, I love the Beco Butterfly, just got it and it's awesome. As for cabs I am not sure about putting your car seat in, I know when we flew to Mexico with DS we just held him on our laps in the transportation bus but that was Mexico so it may be different. You may want to think about bringing your infant seat instead of the britax if you have one, even if DC doesn't fit in it anymore it may be easiest to carry that in cabs and you dont need the base, you can attach to seat belt without base.

I would pack as lightly as you can on the plane ride. It's a bit overwhelming your first flight and I found it easiest just to have minimal amt of diapers and wipes and bottles and a couple new toys DC hasn't seen to keep them occupied. Another suggestion for the plane is, if you plan on taking your car seat you can carry it to the gate, if there happens to be an open seat they allow you to use your car seat. It's a long flight so this might be something you want to do especially if DC is good in a car seat.

As for hotels they'll know the best places to go to get things, you can just ask when you check in and also request a pack and play when you book the room so you don't have to drag yours along with you.

GL and have fun, it can be very overwhelming at first with an infant traveling. Believe me our DS would only nap in his crib so he screamed the whole way to CO and the whole way back to PA. It was a nightmare and I was about to ask for airplane bottles of vodka, lol. Hope your child falls asleep on you easily.

Almost forgot, if you do bring your car seat and they don't have open seats they allow you to check it at the gate with your stroller. I also purchased a backpack carrier or the gogo travelmate to tote the car seat around. DH liked wearing it on his back so he had his hands free.
