Birthday cake!

I think I am going to make my own birthday cake on Friday or Saturday for my get-together with my friends on Saturday night.  (My actual birthday is in exactly 1 week!)

Please give me your recommendations on a YUMMY cake I should make.  Give me the recipe, or at least the flavor combo, and tell me why I should make it!  I prefer cakes from scratch, but I am not opposed so something that uses a box mix, and dresses it up.  (Like this Rum Cake.)

Last year my cake was a carrot cake, so I think I want to do something different  And also, please no suggestions for Dorie's Perfect Party Cake.  I have read a lot of posts about it, and it just seems too complicated this year.  Maybe some other time.

Thanks girls!!!  I can't wait to see what you wizards in the kitchen suggest!

I think I'm going to make my own cake too in a little less than 2 weeks :)

I'm thinking red velvet, Annie's pumpkin cake with butterscotch filling, annie's chocolate peanut butte cake, an oatmeal cake, or a pumpkin gooey butter cake. My mom makes me a chocolate Texas sheet cake, which is really good.

I've really been wanting to try this coconut rum cake and this chocolate glazed hazelnut mousse cake.  I think both of them look so decadent and delicious.

This is what happens when I try to menu plan while sitting on the floor.

this pb cup cake that i made last winter was fantastic!  i've also made it since then using the Hershey's perfectly chocolate chocolate cake recipe and preferred it over Dorie's chocolate cake recipe.

Thanks for all the suggestions!  I think I will try to post again in the evening and then compare all the options!

I have made a chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting & a Reese's peanut butter chocolate glaze before, for a friend's birthday, so I think I will skip that combo.

My birthday was yesterday and I made my own cake too!  I made this one from WS:  http://www.williams-sonoma.com/recipe/recipedetail.cfm?objectid=D66AD82D-6A21-42FA-BB412B837459DF29 

 It is an almond flavored cake with a cream cheese icing and raspberries!  It was easy to make and it was the BEST cake I have ever made!  Was easy enough to make, and looked awesome too!
