Something in lieu of grass?

We don't want grass in our backyard, mostly because there's some really awkward spots that would be difficult to maintain.  Someone told me once there's a tiny flower you can grow in lieu of grass and it's low maintenance and good for little kids to run and play on.  I cannot contact that person to get more info but I'm highly interested.  Any idea what it could be?  It would last year round in Cali.

There are lots of flowering groundcovers. Some of them tolerate foot traffic (nothing approaching the durability of turfgrass, however). We need to know more about the site before we can offer suggestions- it is sun or shade? Dry or wet (for starters)?

Not sure where you are located, but here "monkey grass" is green year around and I mow it once a year in March.  It can be walked on and is very tough.

I know it's been almost two weeks since you posted this, but I hope you see this!

Check out this book: http://www.amazon.com/Reimagining-California-Lawn-Water-conserving-Practices/dp/0978997123.

It has some really great ideas, and I definitely look forward to using one of them when we buy a house someday!
