Office Jerk Says WHAT!?

I'm pretty sure I just woke up in Scranton, PA and I'm waiting for Steve Carrell to come out and make us all go to the conference room for sensitivity training.

I'm new at my job and one of our accountants just straight up looks at me, mid-conversation, looks at my stomach and goes "Are you pregnant?"  The guy I was talking to prior to that little quip turned red and tried to make small talk.

Did I wake up in Real World Unscripted: Corporate Edition? What's wrong with people?

One of my friends has quite a "pooch" since she's had her kids. Multiple times children have asked her if she's pregnant. And well, she actually did kind of look pregnant, like second trimester pregnant. People are so rude, and it's because they probably weren't corrected as children. We should all learn that you don't always say what you think. It's hurtful. Granted, that man probably did indeed think that you were pregnant. That's unfortunate, however the rule of thumb, don't ask anyone if they're pregnant. If you have to ask, that means that they're not. Don't let this bother you though.

I mean. Seriously.  If you don't know them personally or they haven't said "It's a Boy!" then probably best to just not ask, right!?

What a jerk.  My aunt actually asked me that in all seriousness at my cousin's wedding this summer.  I was pissed.

I've had quite a few people ask me that same question. But you know what? I don't get mad because its not their fault. I work in a place where people love to be happy for each other and babies are always reason to talk and be happy about. I eat bad foods and I don't work out. If I want the question to stop, I will do something about it. Maybe you should adapt a mind set that is hey, maybe they are asking because they are trying to be happy for you. Even if its a total stranger. Most people don't ask to be jerks, they ask out of genuine curiosity. Quit getting mad. If you look pregnant, be it bloating or you ate a big lunch or something else, brush it off. If its because you also don't eat well and work out, you really can't get mad at people for asking. And if you were pregnant, you would be stoked to brag about your new life growing inside of you.

Let me guess?  *You're* the office jerk coming to defend yourself?!

Any time I think someone in my office is pregnant, I either wait for the news to circulate, or for them to get bigger. I never ask. I don't feel like I know people in my office well enough to ask that. It's rude
