RC Cruise questions

DH and I are going on allure of the seas in feb....

trying to figure out how we will stay in touch with my parents to check in on the boys???  How much do they charge/minute for wi-fi or phone calls?  Any suggestions?

also, any experiences with this ship in particular are appreciated

I have cruised Carnival and know that it is absolutely outrageous.  I found this in the RC website.

Your friends and family can contact the ship by calling (888) 724-SHIP. Or from outside the U.S. they can call (732) 335-3285. The cost is $7.95 USD a minute and can be charged to their American Express®, MasterCard®, Visa®, Discover® or Diners Club®. From outside the U.S. additional long distance charges will also apply.

You can make ship-to-shore calls from your stateroom, 24 hours a day. The cost is $7.95 USD per minute and will be automatically charged to your SeaPassSMaccount.

You can also use our onboard Internet Cafés, stateroom Internet connection, or Hot Spots to send an e-mail to your friends or family for a minimal fee.

I would probably give that phone number to your parents so that they can contact you in the event of an emergency.  However, I doubt that your going to want to make those phone calls just to check in and catch up at that rate.  Instead, I would suggest trying to make it to an internet cafe (or anywhere that will let you use their wi-fi) while in the ports and contact home during that time with skype.

Use your cell on the islands to call/email. Cheaper than the boat. I've used my cell on a ship and it honestly wasn't too bad but I kept the calls short too. I mean you don't have to call for an hour each day right? Call for 5 mins every other day.

For cell phone rates check with your provider for any extra fees.  Cellular at Sea is $2.49 a minute, turn off data unless you are actively using it.  Check for ports too, my phone plan is still in network in San Juan, pr and the US Virgin Islands.

using their computers for web or your own wifi device (laptop/tablet/wifi on phone) onboard is slow and $0.65 a minute, you can buy packages that drop the per minute cost.

Ask crew members which ports have free wifi/decent Internet cafes, we've been to several that you can even access wifi from your balcony /up on deck while in port.

Internet packages (I've had wifi work just fine using my iPad onboard)

Yes, depending on the ship there are two options for staying connected while onboard.

The Internet Cafe/Workstation
