Checking car seats

Do you use a car seat carrier or cover? If so, what brand do you like? Also do airlines ( we're flying United) charge for checking car seats? Can I check a car seat and carry in a stroller without an additional fee?

I do not use a car seat carrier or cover.  I don't think they are necessary.  I usually fly Delta, but most airlines do not charge for "baby items."  This includes strollers and car seats.  Yes, you can check a car seat and carry in a stroller (there shouldn't be a fee for either since they are "baby items").  You will have to check the stroller at the gate, but again, there is no fee.  The nice thing about checking it at the gate is you can use the stroller in the airport, not have to manuever in on the plane, and then pick it up as you step off the plane.  Very convenient.

We fly quite often and a carseat cover is a must, helps keep it clean and easier to carry.  For our infant seat we had a black carseat cover that we bought at BRU that fit our Chicco and now with our convertible Britax we bought the Britax carrier that has wheels - so nice and convenient!!   As PP said, we check our stroller each time, it's nice to have it for the ride through the airport.

I agree with the 2nd poster, a cover is a must to protect the seat from dirt and damage.  They also make carrying them around the airport easier because they usually have straps to wear like a backpack and/or wheels to drag, which has been a lifesaver for us because we have twins so when we fly we have 2 seats to take.  Checking car seats is free, and much easier than gate checking.

I'd never gate check a car seat - I've heard they get banged around so much during the process of getting to the plane that it's equivalent to a car crash I have a carseat cover - just a general one from BRU - but I check it at the gate
