Boarding protocol for cruises?

How does boarding typically go?  What security measures do they use?  Are there certain things that are prohibited, etc??

I've only sailed with Princess...not sure if the other lines do something different...but you check in, get your cruise card (room key + card to apply all onboard charges). Then you go through security- through a metal detector and your carry on bags through the x-ray machine; Of course you can't bring firearms or weapons, but each cruiseline also has their own rules about bringing alcohol. After that, you take a picture (that they will make available for sale later). Then you take a picture that they attach to your cruise card .. and that's it..you're onboard. Try to go around the middle of the boarding times (so if they say you can get on between 11-3:30, go around 1:30/2pm) and you'll be on in about 10 mins. Where are you going and when?! Have fun!!!

check out the before you board section on RC's website. of course guns, explosives, etc.. are prohibited. there is no liquid restriction like on planes.

i can recommend though-if you only have a bit of luggage that you can carry to just bring it to your stateroom yourself-that way you dont have to wait for it-it can take hours.

Dangerous items are prohibited: guns, explosives etc. Corkscrews & nail clippers are OK. Your own alcohol is prohibited but wine, soda & water may be allowed depending on the cruise line. You go through the metal detectors before you check in & get your sign & sail card.
