2013 vacation ... where to go???

So originally I thought DH would want to go to Kauai ... wrong!  So I need help deciding on somewhere to go.  Budget is about $4-5,000.

We have been/done:

  1. cruised the Hawaiian Islands in 2005
  2. Maui in 2009
  3. Alaska in 2007
  4. Dominican Rep. in ??
  5. Mexico in 2001
  6. Eastern Med. cruise (Italy, Greece, Turkey) 2012
  7. Germany 2012

We are looking at going late September.  DH loves the activity but I like the relaxation.  We have a son stationed in the military in Oahu so we go to Hawaii frequently for long weekends.

 Any ideas would be awesome!!

Go to Placencia, Belize! I am going at the end of the month and I can't wait. It's on a peninsula south of Belize City. You can stay at a fancy hotel, rent out a beach cabana or stay in a cheap hotel. This trip can be catered to all budgets. We are staying at The Placencia Hotel and Residences.

The town has so much character, tons of restaurants, shops, and beaches. You can do tours of the Mayan Ruins, hikes through the jungle, etc.

The place looks like a dream come true. Definitely Google it.

Belize is lovely. Costa Rica also fits your list. Possibly Thailand? That would totally different but amazing.

Kayak has an 'explore' option where you enter your home city, month of travel, and then it lists flights across the globe. It can help you filter down by what you can afford for flights and then what region looks interesting.

For a great combo of relaxation and adventure in that budget range, I'd recommend Central America, especially Belize, Honduras, Panama, and Nicaragua. September is hurricane season, but CA's Caribbean coast does not get hit nearly as often as the Eastern Caribbean. You'll likely have some rain here and there, but that's of course pretty typical in tropical areas any time of year! Here are my recommended areas in each country (I would split the trip between 2-4 different areas, depending on how long you spend there).

Belize:  Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Placencia, San Ignacio (if you wanted to add a few days in the mountains for some off-beach adventure)

Honduras: Roatan, Le Ceiba, Copan

Panama: Bocas del Toro, San Blas Islands, Pearl Islands, Panama City, David

Nicaragua: Corn Islands, Ometepe, Grenada, San Jose del Sur

I can recommend the island of Roatan - been there twice and it's stunning.  Various places to stay depending on your budget.  The Mayan Princess resort in West End is awesome and there's also a fly-fishing lodge called Mango Creek in Port Royal ... they have cabanas over the water. I have happy memories of spending time in a hammock with my book and a cocktail while DH went fishing :)
