HPV in a monogomous relationship

Hi,

I have been married for 12 years. I just tested positive for HPV in my latest pap. My pap last year was negative for hpv. I have always been faithful to my husband. How can I have hpv? my dr said it's sexually transmitted. Can it have been dormant all this time until now - either in me or my husband? I honestly would never believe he would cheat on me??

I'm so upset and confused and my husband is unreachable at work until 2 and I'm starting to freak out.

Sorry I can't make the link clicky. Hopefully this explains some things or leads you to another site that has answers.

Are you sure they specifically tested for HPV in the past?

I found out last year that I have it, turns out that unless a PAP comes back abnormal they won't send it along for further testing. I had an abnormal PAP last year and that's when I found out I had HPV. The doctor says more than likely I've had it for years (both of my sisters also have it).

Most of the strains won't really do anything, just make sure to keep getting regular testing done just in case (my little sister wasn't so lucky and got cervical cancer).

Don't assume the worst that your husband has cheated on you!

Yes I have been tested for HPV in the past. Once when we were undergoing some fertility testing before my DD was conceived and again last year when I had abnormal pap that turned out to be nothing.

So... How did I test positive now?

Have you talked to your doctor about other possible ways to contract the virus?

I'm not 100% sure, but i'm pretty sure you can get it through any bodily fluid contact. Do some research before you accuse your husband of something. I made the mistake of coming home from my HPV discovery and accusing my DH (then fiance) of cheating and he was very very hurt. I wish I could take it back and that I had known that my doctor had never tested me specifically for HPV till the abnormal PAP.

Just trying to give some perspective.

You've been tested for it, but your DH hasn't. To my knowledge, there is no test for men to take. It's possible that he's had it this whole time and it was dormant until recently. If you don't believe your husband is/was/could cheat on you, then give him the benefit of the doubt.

80% of women deal with this at some point in their lives. Generally, it's not anything at all to worry about once you get past the shock of it all. Continue to go in for regular screenings and you'll likely never have any serious complications. Also, it could disappear on it's own at any time.

best of luck to you!

Read up on HPV, call your Doctors office and speak to a nurse. They will answer any and all questions you may have. The only thing I would question is how did it not pop when they tested you while PG.

HPV can be dormant or non-dormant depending on your hormones changing. Some women test positive for HPV when they are pregnant, and do not test positive otherwise. I would not jump to the conclusion that your husband is cheating.

To the best of my knowledge, HPV is something that can just remain dormant and sometimes make a sudden appearance ... or sometimes never come out at all.

My older sister never tested positive for HPV until she was pregnant with her second child. The doctor said most likely she'd been carrying it and it just remained dormant until that point in her life (And that a majority of women do test positive for some strain or other at some point in their life).

Do you have any other reason to doubt your husband's fidelity? Or is this your only "red flag"? If this is literally the only thing causing you to suspect him, you might want to do some more research on HPV and possibly get a second a opinion from another doctor before you accusing your husband of fooling around on you.

Yes, it is entirely possible to test negative for HPV and then test positive for it later. It can be dormant in your system for YEARS. And if it 's dormant, it won't show up on a test.

Gonorrhea? Your husband is cheating. But HPV? You've likely had it for years and years, and it's only now becoming active.

I tested positive for HPV recently after being in a monogamous relationship for 2 years. The way my doc explained it was that it can remain dormant for a while and resurface randomly. For a while it made me feel pretty icky, but by the 6 month follow up, my body had flushed it out. Good luck! I know how this feels and it sucks!

Men can not be tested for hpv we can carry is but never test for it. My wife has it we've been faithful for ten years. It can lay dormant for that long.

I'm sure you already have your answers by now, but thought I'd post just in case!

Yes, it can lay dormant for many years. Yes, it can spring up again at another point in your life. You could have got it when you were 16... and now it's going to hang out pretty much forever.

When I tested positive, I freaked. Bad. I felt so dirty for having an STI... I even had Guardasil back in the day but apparently it didn't protect me from this strain. My doctor assured me that the majority of women get it and it stays in their system but it never does anything. When you test positive, it means that it's acting up (like your vag has the flu) and cells change a little. Doesn't mean that your hubby is cheating. It could have been from your HS boyfriend!

Hope this helps!
