who to figure out how large a light to go over bathroom vanity?

is there some balancing that needs to be done, or do you just go by how much light you need?   I have a 48" vanity, and am debating between a 30" (4 lights) and 23" (3 lights).   It's the only source of light in the room, but am not sure how much more light one additional bulb will add. Thoughts?

Make a template with paper spanning the length of each to tape above the vanity, then stand back and see if it looks balanced to you. Personally, I like two lights over a large, double sink vanity.

I agree with the template idea.  30 sounds okay just from numbers...but its always better to try to 'see' it in the space!

 

worst case, could you buy both and return one? =)

Consider the size of the mirror you have over the vanity, the light fixture should be in proportion with that also. Depending on the size of the bathroom, you might consider a recessed light/fan close to the shower or tub area.
