Illegal to buy second hand kids clothes?

http://www.change.org/ideas/view/save_handmade_toys_from_the_cpsia

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/handmadetoys/?e

http://www.handmadetoyalliance.org/it-s-not-just-toys

Check out the links above.  They talk about the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA); mandates testing toys for lead and other bad stuff.  Sounds good, right?  Well, there's also concern that this would include second hand items, requiring they be third party tested before anyone could purchase them, soo you could no longer buy kids clothes at consignment stores, yard sales etc.

I would say 50-75% of my kids clothes are second hand because I save a ton of money.  I also think it's just as "safe" as buying new kids clothes.

Just wanted to pass this info along.

ridiculous!  you would think they would have more important things to worry about, like, oh, I don't know, the state of the economy, wars going on everywhere, healthcare issues, etc.

I recently came across that as well.  I understand protecting children and all.  This stems from the recent shift in children's toys being made over in China and the extremely high lead content.  This doesn't mean that every manufacturer is doing that though.

This law will literally put thousands of small businesses out of business.  Every consignment shop, every church sale, every small time guy who makes toys in his garage on the weekend (wooden toys), every etsy seller of clothing and diapers, every small toy manufacturer who can't afford the $4k per toy that it cost to test(and there are some great educational toy companies that fall into this category), No more craigslist, ebay etc.

There was a post about this the other day and there is a blog somewhere that addresses it too.  Basically it was made to address all of the crappy stuff that has come in from China lately, but oversite has included used and home made stuff too.  Wish I had time to search if for you, but I'm swamped.  The blog title was something like "good (some green or healthy word) mommy".

Oh, and the blog had info about how to contact people to fight it.

April is National Grilled Cheese Month. We're still celebrating.

Before you ask, it's provalone, aged cheddar, and port salut with a tomato on sourdough bread.

I somehow am suspicious that this could ever actually become a law.  It just seems SO ridiculous.

So insane.  I emailed my rep and senator. I altered the form letter that Domer put up over the weekend to add in this paragraph:

I also would like to see exemptions for sellers of used items. Thrift stores and the like are not only eco-friendly in that they keep usable products out of landfills, but used products also are simply the only way that some people can provide for their children.

As far as I can tell it has already been passed and it goes into effect 02/10/09.

This was my very first thought. How wasteful.
