Days 4-7: Naxos

We stayed at the Kavos Villas in Naxos, in their "honeymoon" suite. We had a little cottage to ourselves, and they decorated our room for us. So cute. We loved it here.

The pool area

On our second day here, we rented a car and drove all over the island. This was one of our best days - we drove along the coast, then went inland to visit a few small towns, and then headed back towards the beach. We ended up finding a private beach to hang out at and watch the sun set- so much fun!

We also rented a little scotter one day.

Days 8-13:Santorini

Santorini was our last island. We stayed in the town of Oia at the Katikies Hotel. This was our splurge hotel, but worth every penny. We've never stayed anywhere like this place before! We also loved staying in Oia. The views were incredible, and because part of the town is blocked to traffic, it was so nice and easy to walk around.

There are cats and dogs all over the islands! This little guy took a liking to DH.

We rented a car and drove to the site of Ancient Thira, and then went to the red and black beaches.

We walked down these stairs to a little, little fishing village (Ammoudi Bay) for dinner one night. It was hike, but worth it for the fresh fish and the views of the sunset.

Days 14-15: Athens

We finished our trip with an overnight in Athens. We stayed at the NJV Plaza Hotel in Syntagma Square, near the Plaka District. We only had a short time in Athens, so we visited the Acroplis and walked around the Plaka. We loved Athens - we had been warned that it was dirty and crowded and that we'd be disappointed after visiting the islands, but we thought it was beautiful, and we loved the central location of our hotel - we could walk to everything!

Honeymoon Reviews

We had an incredible time on our honeymoon. DH and I travel a lot, and this was, by far, our best experience yet. The trip there was long - since we were married in Upstate NY, we had to fly from Rochester to Chicago, and then Chicago to London and London to Athens. We used DHs miles on American, and the flights were all fine. We then flew Olympic Air to Mykonos, took ferries in between the islands, and flew Aegean on our return trip from Santorini to Athens. We enjoyed the ferries- it was a little chaotic at the docks, but really no worse than we found it to be at the airports. We used the Hellenic Hi-Speed to go from Mykonos to Naxos, and the NELS to go from Mykonos to Santorini. There was plenty of room to store luggage, and we reserved window seats for both trips, so we were able to see everything. We purchased our ferry tickets once we were on the islands, usually the first day that we arrived on each island, and had no problem getting great prices and good seats! On of the best things we did was to arrange for transportation to our hotels from each of the airports/ports. It was completely crazy when we got off the ferries - there are tons of people, cabs, vendors, etc. and so we were very glad to have someone waiting for us!

In terms of luggage, DH and I each brought a back-pack and one suitcase. I definitely packed more than I needed! Flip-flops, shorts and tees are all we needed during the day (we were in our bathing suits most days anyway). At night, DH ususally wore khakis or nice shorts and and a nice tee, and I wore skirts or capris with nicer tops. It did get a little cooler at night and so I usually needed a light sweater, too. I didn't wear ANY of the heels I brought - even flat wedges proved to be a little tricky with all of the hills and cobblestones. I ended up buying two pairs of nicer leather flip flops in Mykonos and wore those most nights. Since we did do some hiking, I was glad to have brought a pair of sneakers along as well.

Mykonos

We enjoyed Mykonos - the island is beautiful (although VERY windy), and I loved walking around the town, and DH loved our day trip to Delos. The people here were interesting - it seemed like it was lots of young, attractive Europeans with tons of money (or at least trying to make it seem like they had tons of money!) It made for good people watching - DH and I liked to plop ourselves down in the cafes by the water for coffee and crepes after dinner. We did go out for drinks a few times, but we weren't really looking to do the whole club thing on our honeymoon.

Where we stayed: Hotel Cavo Tagoo, located just outside of Mykonos Town, overlooking the town and the New Port. Cavo Tagoo just completed a major renovation and it's beautiful. The hotel is very modern and fresh looking, and our room was large, with a big bathroom, lots of windows and a semi-private balcony with an amazing view of the pool and the sea. The hotel's proximity to town was very convenient. We were able to walk (although the road can be busy), and cab rides at night were very inexpensive. We were not so impressed with the hotel staff - they tended to seem a little aloof and were not particularly helpful or friendly.

Where We Ate:Breakfast was included with our hotel, so we ate there every morning. For lunch, we usually just grabbed something quick while we were walking around. There are tons of little restaurants throughout town and on the water; we had a good lunch at Alefkandra, in Little Venice. Our favorite restaurant in Mykonos was Phillipi, located in the center of Old Town. The restaurant is on two levels in this beautiful garden (see pics above). It was so romantic! The food was amoung the best we had on our entire trip, and the service was professional but so friendly as well. When we were getting ready to leave, the owner brought us complimentary drinks and asked us to stay longer! On another night, we had dinner at the Sea Satin Market, which is located just below the windmills, right on the water. This restaurant was written up everywhere (we even saw it in our in-flight magazine on the way back home!), so we had pretty high expectations. The view was amazing, and the food was good, but, we were diappointed in the service. When we first arrived, it was very windy, and our table was not under the large awning they have. When we asked if we could sit under the awning, they would not move us, saying that the other tables were reserved (we had a reservation, too). By the time we left (around 10:00), the restaurant was still mostly empty. We never received some of what we ordered, yet were still charged for them, and they gave us a hard time when we tried to dispute the check. The last straw for me was that a waitress hit me on the head with her full tray as she was walking by our table - she hit me so hard that things fell off the tray, yet she never apologized. We left as quickly as we could and consoled ourselves with chocolate crepes in town. =)

What we did:Since Mykonos was our first island and we were still recovering from our travelling, we decided to take it easy here. We spent two days hanging out by the pool at our hotel, wandering around town, shopping, visiting the windmills, etc., and on another day, we took the ferry to Delos. (On a side note - the ferry ride was a little scary...we were rocking like crazy. I was glad I had taken dramamine in the morning!) This was one of DHs favorite days - he loves history, architecture, etc, so he was like a little kid in a candy store here. We decided not to do a guided tour, which gave us more flexibility to see the things we wanted to. We used a map they gave us on the island, and Frommer's and Fodor's guides. I'd strongly recommend this trip - we really, really enjoyed it.

Naxos

Naxos is the largest of the islands, but one of the less touristy. We loved it here. It was so laid-back and casual, everyone was incredibly friendly and the island itself was just amazing. We wished we could have spent more time here!

Where we stayed: Kavos Villas and Suites, located about 10 minutes from the main town, overlooking Agios Prokopios Beach. Kavos is a really charming hotel, consisting of a bunch of private villas and suites. We had reserved their "honeymoon" villa - we had our own little suite located at the very top of the property, so we had an amazing view and lots of privacy. They decorated the suite for us with lots of flowers and gave us a complimentary bottle of wine. The owner, Barbara, and her staff are so friendly and will do anything to make sure you're comfortable and happy. The pool area is very nice. The only downside was that there were a lot of children there and their parents let them run a little wild. We absolutely loved the hotel, but we could have done without the kids running around.

Where we ate:We ate breakfast at the hotel every morning and had dinner there one night. The food was great. The restaurant also serves snacks and drinks all day long - DH loved their Greek bruschetta! We had lunch one day in town at Scirocco - this restaurant is located right on the main square in town and the food and service were excellent. Just like in Mykonos, there are also lots of cafes along the water that are good for quick afternoon snacks or drinks. For dinner, DH was craving Mexican one night and we ate at a Mexican place in town - big mistake! DH said his burritto tasted like it had been frozen and they just stuck it in the microwave! On another night, we ate at a little place on the beach at Agio Prokopios - I can't remember the name, but there are a lot of places along the beach that all seem very similar. After that dinner, we went to a place called Banana for dessert and drinks - you have to walk along the beach to get to it. There was a really fun crowd there and their drinks and desserts were so good!

What we did:We rented a car one day - our hotel arranged it for us - and drove around the entire island. This was one of the highlights of our trip for me. The views of the sea as we climbed the island are just breathtaking, and there are so many little towns tucked away between the hills. We stopped in a few towns (Apollon, Aperanthos), and then stopped by a few of the beaches on our way back home. We liked the beaches at Kastraki, Mikri Vigla and Plaka the best. The following day, we rented a moped to explore the beaches some more - this was SO much fun! We also spent one day walking around the Old Town, where there is an ancient Venetian Castle (the Kastro). This area of town is really interesting and pretty, with lots of winding streets and flowers everywhere.

Santorini

Santorini was my favorite island of the trip (DH preferred Naxos). We did both agree that it was the perfect island to end our trip with - our hotel and island itself were just incredible, and we truly felt completely spoiled, relaxed and well-fed by the time we left!

Where we stayed: Katikies, located in the town of Oia. This hotel, which is built right into the side of the cliffs, was unlike any place we've ever stayed. We were speechless. When we were picked up at the port, the driver greeted us with snacks and water and cool towels. At check-in, they sat us down on a couch and brought us champagne and water, and then took us on a small tour of the hotel. We were also given a cell phone that we could use to call reception if there was anything we needed while we were out on the island! Our room was perfect - we were upgraded to a suite, so we had lots of space and a big bathroom with a jacuzzi, as well as a huge private patio with a wondeful view of the pools and the sea. They brought breakfast to us every morning on our patio. The hotel has 3 pools - the large infinity pool, a smaller inifinity pool, a cold water plunge pool - and a large jacuzzi. It was difficult to get lounge chairs near the main pool, but we always found chairs (or beds actually) nearer the smaller pools, and we preferred this - most times, the smaller pools were completely empty so it felt like we had them to ourselves! The service here was attentive, but not intrusive, and everyone was so welcoming and friendly. It was hard to leave!

Where we ate:We had a lot of good meals in Santorini. I think we regained all of our pre-wedding weight loss on this island alone! We ate at our hotel for breakfast every day (Greek yogurt with fruit and honey, and chocolate croissants - so good!). We walked into Oia for lunch one day and had good salads and sandwhiches at Skiza. We also had late night pizza and dessert here one night. We had an inexpensive but very good dinner at Skala. Our two best meals were at Selene in Fira and Ambrosia in Oia. We were able to get tables on the patios at both restaurants and so we could watch the sun set as we ate. The service was warm and friendly and the food was incredible. On a recommendation from our hotel, we walked down the cliffs (200 something stairs) to Ammoudi Bay, where we ate the Sunset Taverna. This was a unique experience - Ammoudi Bay is just a little fishing port and the tavernas are literally right on top of the water. We had an amazing sunset view from our table, and the fish was so fresh. It was a good hike down, but well worth it (and we called at cab to get back up!)

What we did:We loved our hotel and the pool so much that we hardly wanted to leave. When we did venture out, we decided to do the cliff walk between Oia and Fira. From our guide books, we were under the impression that this was a long but somewhat leisurely hike - not so. From Oia to Fira, the walk is almost entirely up hill, and only parts of the walk are paved or have stones - the rest is simply dirt/rocks/etc. DH and I love to hike and go fairly regularly, but we only made it about 1/4 of the way before we decided it was much too hot and would take us much too long to go the whole way. I think we probably should have taken the bus or cab to Fira and hiked back to Oia for an easier (downhill) walk. The views were unbeatable though, so the little bit we did was worth it!
We also rented a car one day to drive to Ancient Thira. Again, DH loves this stuff, so he enjoyed it, but I did not find this site to be as interesting as Delos. The ride to the site was a little scary, too - it's up a mountain and the road is very narrow and unpaved with lots of switchbacks. The site itself is a pretty good walk - wear sneakers if you go! The trip was worth it for me because of the views - you can see almost the whole southern/western part of the island from the top of the site. From here, we drove south to the Red Beach. Again, it's a pretty good hike to get from the parking areas to the beach, and since it was high season, the beach was completely mobbed. We took a few pictures, jumped in the sea and left. On the way back, we stopped at the Boutari Winery for a tasting, and we also found a pottery workshop not far from the winery. I had wanted to buy some pottery so we stopped in. We were greeted by the owner and artist, and ended up spending nearly an hour talking with her. She was so interesting and had really beautiful pieces - I'll add the name of the store once I remember it! We enjoyed driving around the island, but we were happy to get back to our hotel and spend the end of the day by the pool!

Wedding Pictures

We were married on 07.23.06 in Geneva, New York. With nearly all of our guests travelling from out of town, the wedding turned into a three day party, and we loved every minute of it. Our wedding day itself was for us, without question, the most perfect day. We had incredible weather and incredible vendors, and everything went off without a hitch. More importantly, though, we have never experienced the kind of love and joy that we did on that day. It was overwhelming and we could not have asked for more.

It was such a beautiful day - after huge downpours on Saturday, the sun came out on Sunday, and we couldn't have been luckier with the weather!

And last but not least....our "cuddlehound," Luci....
